A recent General Surgery News article revealed laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery, also known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy, produced better weight loss results when compared to laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding procedures and lower rates of complication when compared to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). The extensive study was conducted over a three-year span with 2,949 gastric sleeve patients. The researchers compared them to other patients who had undergone gastric banding and RYGB surgery.
The study also showed gastric sleeve surgery produced results similar to RYGB when researchers evaluated the reduction of obesity-related diseases, including diabetes, sleep apnea, and hypertension. The study’s findings encouraged the Medicare administration to increase its coverage of the gastric sleeve procedure in Michigan and eight other states. Overall, the study provided further validity that the gastric sleeve procedure can be a very effective and valuable long-term weight loss solution for patients with morbid obesity.
